What is FSCS?

By the verify.trading team · Last reviewed · How we write

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) is the UK's compensation scheme, which can pay eligible claims against an authorised firm that fails, up to a limit.

Key points

  • UK scheme for authorised firms that fail.
  • 85,000 GBP per person per firm for investment claims, at the time of writing.
  • Does not cover trading losses.

FSCS explained

For investment claims the limit at the time of writing is 85,000 GBP per person per firm. Limits are reviewed, so check the FSCS website for the current figure and for what is covered.

FSCS protection applies to firms authorised in the UK and does not cover losses from trading or from poor performance. An offshore entity of a broker is generally outside it.
