How to use the compound growth calculator

The maths

Balance_n = (Balance_(n−1) + Deposit) × (1 + Rate)

Formula

Final = Σ months of: (balance + deposit) × (1 + monthlyRate/100)

Worked example

  1. Start 10,000, no deposits, 5% a month, 12 months.
  2. After month 1: 10,000 × 1.05 = 10,500.
  3. After month 12: 10,000 × 1.05^12 ≈ 17,959.
  4. Add 500 a month and the final balance climbs to about 25,929, with 7,929 of net profit over the 16,000 contributed.

How does compound growth work for a trading account?
Each period's gain is added to the balance before the next period, so the next period earns on a larger base. Over time this grows faster than a straight percentage of the starting balance.
What monthly return is realistic?
There is no safe number. Many profitable traders target low single-digit monthly returns after costs; higher consistent figures are rare and usually mean higher risk. This calculator is a projection, not a forecast.
What about losing months?
Losses compound too. A 20% drawdown needs a 25% gain to break even; a 50% drawdown needs a 100% gain. Model losing months by entering a negative rate for a few months to see the dent.
Does it account for prop firm payouts and splits?
No. Payout schedules, profit splits, resets and fees change the real figure. Use the output as the gross before those adjustments.
Why is monthly deposit added before the gain?
A conservative choice: the deposit earns the month's return. If you deposit at month-end instead, drop the rate slightly or add fewer months to approximate.
