How to use the profit / loss calculator

The maths

P&L = (exit − entry) × units × direction, in the quote currency

Formula

P&L = (Exit − Entry) × Lots × 100,000 (long) | P&L = (Entry − Exit) × Lots × 100,000 (short)

Worked example

  1. Long 1 lot EUR/USD from 1.0850 to 1.0940. Units = 100,000.
  2. Move = 1.0940 − 1.0850 = 0.0090. P&L = 0.0090 × 100,000 = +900 USD.
  3. The same trade from the short side would show −900 USD.
  4. In pips: 0.0090 / 0.0001 = 90 pips. For a yen pair the pip size is 0.01 and the quote currency is yen, so convert to see dollars.

How do I calculate profit or loss on a forex trade?
Take the move in the pair's quote currency, multiply by the units you traded. For a 1 lot EUR/USD long from 1.0850 to 1.0940, the move is 0.0090 x 100,000 = 900 USD.
Why is the result in the quote currency?
A forex trade's profit lands in the pair's second (quote) currency. For a USD-quoted pair that is already USD; for others, convert at the broker's rate to see it in your account currency.
Does the calculator include spread or commission?
No. It uses the entry and exit price you type. To include costs, add the spread to a long entry (or subtract from a short) and subtract commissions from the result.
How do pips convert to money?
Pips measure the move in the pair's smallest standard unit (0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for yen pairs). The money value of a pip is set by lot size and the pair's quote currency.
Is this exact to the cent?
It's a planning figure. Slippage, swaps and commission shift the real P&L; your broker's statement is the record.
